New Joint Commission Resources Video Shows Benefits of Critical Test Result Management; Touts CTRM as Strategy to Achieve Patient Safety Goals

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) May 25, 2007 -- A new professional education video produced by Joint Commission Resources, Inc. shows how technology-based critical test result management (CTRM) can help hospitals meet the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals for improving communication among caregivers.
   
Titled, "Patient Safety on the Line: Using Technology to Aid Communication Among Caregivers," the 30-minute video was supported by an unrestricted grant from Vocada, Inc. The video explains how CTRM is a strategic pathway to both greater patient safety and more efficiency and draws on the experiences of two Vocada customers to show how they use Veriphy™ for CTRM under real-world conditions.
   
The video includes comments by Richard Croteau, MD, executive director for Patient Safety Initiatives for the Joint Commission International Center for Patient Safety. The interviews also include clinicians and hospital administrators at Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas and Dallas-based Baylor Healthcare System.

The Joint Commission's 2007 National Patient Safety Goals for hospitals, http://www.jointcommission.org/PatientSafety/NationalPatientSafetyGoals/07_hap_cah_npsgs.htm, specifically require hospitals to:
•    Improve the effectiveness of communication among caregivers (Goal #2),
•    For verbal or telephone orders or for telephonic reporting of critical test results, verify the complete order or test result by having the person receiving the information record and "read-back" the complete order or test result (Goal #2a)
•    Measure, assess and, if appropriate, take action to improve the timeliness of reporting, and the timeliness of receipt by the responsible licensed caregiver, of critical test results and values (Goal #2c)
•    Implement a standardized approach to "hand off" communications, including an opportunity to ask and respond to questions (Goal #2e)
   
CTRM is a technology-based strategy to automate and ensure efficient, timely, and verified communication of critical and urgent test results and critical values by diagnostic departments directly to the responsible clinical staff. CTRM also enables administrators to set goals and targets for turn-around times (TAT) and monitor performance. The technology automates compliance with legal and professional standards for medical communications.
   
"CTRM technology is an important advance and when properly implemented, it has the potential to improve patient safety and make health care delivery more efficient," Dr. Croteau said.
