Have you noticed that everyone providing information to help you make more money online writes, or speaks in initials? Make More Money Online Best Online Business Opportunity Starting a Home Based Business
When you first start exploring and learning about Internet marketing, starting a home based business, you will likely read a lot of articles, and listen to a lot of trainings. Many times, the calls and trainings are obviously not meant for beginners. The entire call can be surrounding a subject referred to by its initials, PPC, MLM, SRP, SEO, etc.
Problem is, many times the author, or speaker assumes that the audience knows the basics of the subject and doesnt need to be told what the initials stand for. You can get to the end of a presentation and still not know. You can feel as lost as you do reading the "texting" language on your teenagers phone! You know, my "bff" Jill?. lol.
Lets not leave you hanging. If you are starting a home based business, one of the most important topics in Internet marketing is SEO Search Engine Optimization. If you are going to make more money online, you need to get a handle on the basics regardless of the best online business opportunities you use. What Is Search Engine Optimization?
Search engine optimization is unique to the Internet. An analogy to explain SEO would be a comparison to traditional print advertising.
Assume you want to place an advertisement for your business in the local paper. The more you are willing to spend, the bigger and fancier the ad you can afford to place, and greater exposure your advertisement will get. The ads garnering the greatest exposure are the full page displays in the front page section of the paper. However, they are out of the price range for most businesses.
In light of the high cost of print advertising, competitors with bigger budgets are able to pay for the larger and more prominent advertisement placements than companies with smaller budgets. Unless you have a significant advertising budget, you cant compete to out bid your competitor for that page. This puts you at a disadvantage as you are not able to place your ad in the best possible position to expose prospects to your companys ad. You are likely to find your 1/8 page ad buried on page 8 of the public records section of the paper. How Do Search Engine Optimization and Print Advertising Compare?
On the search engine results pages, ads are essentially the same size. However, it is the placement of the ads on those results pages that is significant!.
When looking at search results page, you notice sites listed along the top of the page, and sites listed in a left column and in a right column. There are typically 10 sites listed per column per page. Depending on the popularity of the subject, there can be as few as 1 to 10 pages of site listings, up to hundreds or thousands of pages, with the same number of site listings shown on each page.
Typically the ads running along the top of the page and in the right hand column are sponsored, or paid links to sites. This means that someone has paid the search engine to have their site listed, by bidding against other advertisers with similar offerings, based on keywords typed in on search page, by someone searching that subject.
In essence, the more popular the keywords used in the search, the more that sponsor, or advertiser had to offer to pay the search engine, every time someone clicks on their page or ad. Now there are nuances that can affect this scenario, but this is the simplified version.
In Internet or search engine advertising, all of the ads are essentially the same size, but the goal is to have your site placed as high as possible in the results when someone searches for what you are offering. The goal is to be in the top three to five positions on the first search results page, because they are the first sites that appear on most standard computer screens when the search engine returns the results of someones search. This is known as being placed Above the Fold
Because people are in such a hurry and have such a short attention span, most rarely look past the 1st page, and almost never past the 2nd search results page. Depending on the resolution and the size of your monitor, rankings from 5 through 10 will only be seen if the prospects scroll down to the bottom of the screen. While you are willing to scroll down the screen to read an article, many people will not scroll down the results page. The sites with the top three rankings, or placements, get almost all of the traffic in both the left and right columns.
This is the most basic of explanations, but, if you are looking to launch a highly effective campaign to draw targeted, non-sponsored traffic to your site, you need to optimize the location of your site on the search engine results pages.
Here is Where SEO Comes In
So if the sites listed in the right column (sponsored links) paid for their placement to get to the top three spots in the right column by bidding on keywords, how are the spots in the left column (non-sponsored or "organic" links) placed? The answer is SEO, search engine optimization.
People buying the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times, do not buy the paper to read the ads, they buy the paper to read the articles of interest to them. They buy papers for relevant content!
So where do the publishers place the articles that their subscribers want to read the most? They put them on the front page of the paper, and on the front pages of each of the sections of interest (news, financial, entertainment, and sports, etc.) in the paper. Where are the most expensive places to place an ad in these papers? They are on the front pages of each of the sections of interest among the relevant content of the articles or stories, readers purchased the papers to read in the first place.
The next logical question to ask is how do the newspapers place articles in each section of the paper? They are placed based on relevant content contained in the articles. They determine if the content in the article is compelling enough to keep the readers coming back day after day, buying the paper to get the relevant content and information they are looking for? Which reporters and journalist are rewarded by having their stories placed on the front pages? They are those who consistently provide the relevant and compelling content. They are also the reporters who are paid the most.
The news papers pay writers and reporters for relevant and compelling content to be on the front pages. Advertisers pay the paper to place their ads on the front pages among the articles containing the relevant content.
Search engines don't pay for content, but reward providers of relevant content (sites in the left hand column of the search results page), with good placement of their sites. Paid advertisers (sites at the top and in the right hand column of the search results page) pay the search engines to have their sites advertised, or placed adjacent to the sites with relevant content in the left hand column. That is SEO in a nutshell!
