How to Become Profitable in Business

Agriculture is one of the most difficult industries to earn a profit in-especially cattle ranching. It is the oldest market on earth. With the average ranch only reaching a profit once every ten years, what tips can we derive from the world's most accomplished ranch managers to help us be more successful in our own businesses?

Several years ago, when I was in my first of two rounds of college, I had the opportunity to spend a few days on a large cattle ranch that reached profitability every single year. Not only did they reach profitability, but they were able to achieve a good margin as wellevery year. I spent two days listening to presentations from the ranch manager who taught us his secrets.

Know every expense as a per unit cost If you deal widgets, or if you sell services, what are your expenses in terms of each unit? First, write down all of your expense categories and arrange them greatest to least. You ought to know the per unit cost of even your light bill. When you have your expense categories on paper, you and your team can begin looking for ways to reduce your expenses.

Can we reduce power costs from $0.25 to $0.14 per unit by turning lights off when they arent being used, buying better lightbulbs, or changing services? One airline saved over $40,000 in yearly expenses by dropping 1 olive off of their salad served in flight.

Bust the Myths in Your Business- Which routine aspects of your business are done just because they've always been done that way? My ranching friends found that feeding cattle during the winter was their biggest expense. After some pondering, they concluded that buffalo didn't have hay in the winter. They examined the winter feeding habits of buffalo and found that they will dig through snow to get at the feed. Our ranching friends put cattle in an enclosed area, buried the hay beneath snow and trained their cows to dig for food. Not only did they bust the myth that cattle have to be mechanically fed during the winter but they also reduced several cents per pound from their expenses.

Focus on Your True Profit Centers What truly makes the cash in your company? Frequently, we permit ourselves to be distracted from our central offering. By veering from our core, we unknowingly consume cash resources as we change our systems to accommodate the new task. The ranchers shifted the focus of their operation from beef production to grass production. They already knew how many pounds of beef they could obtain off each acre and they worked to guard and improve the land and its yields. Most ranchers concentrate on the cattle and over graze, which reduces production capacity. What about you? Are you concentrating on the true harvest of your business, or are you over grazing?

Factor in the Real Market Value- Many ranchers assume that if they grow and harvest their own hay, they will save money and increase profits in their cattle.

The truth is that the hay has a market value. If it costs $30 per ton to grow hay and the market is paying $75 per ton, then your actual cost is $75 per ton. Even though the cash does not leave the bank account, you are actually experiencing a $45 per ton decrease in cash flow. The same holds true for workers. What amount would you be paid for your skills and expertise if you were employed by someone else? You must calculate your actual value into your company's expenses to get a true picture of profitability; or else you could be losing cash in the form of lost opportunity costs. By failing to calculate your true market value of your labor, you could be simply transferring profit from yourself to make the other (your company) only look like it is reducing expenses.

Buy Customers on a Fixed Cost- To bring a greater supply of cash into your company, you should properly distribute your marketing budget; you must begin by knowing the life-time value of a customer.

You must determine how long a customer is with you and the net profit they produce. This number will allow you to see how much you can afford to pay to obtain a new customer. For instance, if your average customer remains with you for 2 years and they spend approximately $500 gross sales and it costs you $300 to supply that customer with goods and services, then the life-time value of your customer is $200. You could technically spend up to $200 to acquire and maintain a customer. Have you thought about directing parts of your marketing budget to customer retention? How would you respond if you did business with a company that thought of you on your birthday or other special events? Create a fixed cost that you will use to gain new customers, and then always monitor your marketing activities to make sure you are on budget, spending an adequate amount, and not squandering money on ineffective campaigns.

Let's learn from the professionals in the most difficult industry on the planet. Nasty little expenses are the pest of profit making. Drill down to the molecular level of your financials and uncover the hidden pockets of profit that exist in your business.
