Denver Business Helps Hawaii and Alaska Residents Beat the High Cost of Shipping

Denver, CO (PRWEB) September 24, 2008 -- Former Hawaii resident Darrell Houghton recently launched Aloha Forwarding (http://www.alohaforwarding.com), a package forwarding service aimed at Hawaii and Alaska residents who are frustrated with the high cost of UPS and FedEx deliveries. Priority Mail is the least expensive way to ship small packages to Hawaii and Alaska. However, some merchants do not offer that option. Residents can now have their packages delivered to Aloha Forwarding, who will then forward their package to them using Priority Mail. Can residents still save money going through Aloha Forwarding? "Absolutely!" says Houghton. "Even with our small handling fee, people can save anywhere from $22 to over $100 per package."

Houghton, who lived on the Big Island for nearly five years, knows all too well the drawbacks of living in one of the "non-continental" United States, where shipping costs add significantly to the cost of living.

"One of the first things new Hawaii and Alaska transplants have to get used to," says Houghton, "is the sticker shock they experience when shopping at their local store." With surging energy prices, items people buy are only going to get more expensive, squeezing cash-strapped residents even more.

Like a lot of people, Houghton quickly turned to the internet to buy things he could not find in local stores. "I became a big Ebay fan. I bought a lot of things online that were cheaper than what I could find locally." But finding those deals wasn't without challenges. "The key really is finding merchants who shipped via Priority Mail, which is the cheapest way to get things to Hawaii," says Houghton. But easier said than done. Surprisingly, some merchants refuse to ship to Hawaii or Alaska. Many other retailers do not offer Priority Mail as a shipping option, preferring to ship by UPS or FedEx because of the ability to track packages and have a signed delivery confirmation. But that level of service comes at a price. A 2-pound package shipped from the mainland to the Big Island via UPS, for example, costs over $38. Shipped via Priority Mail, that same package costs $8.25

"It's easy to crack jokes about the U.S. Postal Service, but the value you receive is incredible," says Houghton. "A lot of things I order online aren't of such high value that I need them to be tracked and hand delivered."

"Whenever I found something I wanted to buy, but the retailer didn't offer Priority Mail, the only alternative was to have it shipped to someone I knew on the mainland, then ask them to forward it to me via Priority Mail," continued Houghton. "Even paying the UPS charges plus postage was still cheaper than shipping to me directly. But I hated doing it that way because I didn't like imposing on other people."

But necessity is the mother of invention, and when Houghton and his wife, Vivienne, moved to Denver, Houghton saw it as an opportunity to fill a need and provide a service they wish they had while living in Hawaii.
