When I was a child, I spent my summers with my best friend at his parent's lake house. If the weather was good we would all go swimming – but not without me putting on an entire production about venturing into the water. My friends would run down the pier and "splash", jump right in.

I on the other hand, would run down the pier with the best of intentions and when I reached the end would suddenly stop and stick only my big toe into the water! This went on for 5 or 6 attempts until I could convince myself that I wasn't going to die. The anxiety and fear I felt literally had a death grip on me.

Business is no different for the burgeoning entrepreneur. Venturing out on your own is not without certain real apprehensions. Fear of failure, the uncertainty of what lies ahead and forcing yourself to get out of your comfort zone can be crippling if left unchecked.

You need to actively seek inside you that which helps you to be better than the sum of your parts. Everyone wants better for themselves but it's those few whose drive is so intense and their dreams so real that they will be enjoying the success that they have yearned for.

The biggest obstacle in life that you'll ever face is YOU! Write down and realize your fears. It's only when you realize them for what they are can you deal with and overcome them. The freedom you'll feel will be overwhelming.

Fear will be replaced with a sense of accomplishment and pride as you grow your chosen business but take care not to rest on your laurels – build upon them and take your business to the next level.

For me, the freedom and ability to do more with my life was the real appeal. I knew I had more to offer than what could be appreciated in a more traditional job atmosphere.

What will be your motivating factor? For each of us the answer will be different but it's a questions that we must ask and answer for it alone will provide the base upon which we will build our business.
